Airlines Focus On Biofuel Trials Gather Momentum

It’s bad enough for some propeller aircrafts to be explained as being powered by rubber bands. Now the cynics could begin having a dig at commercial aircraft flying on whatever from cooking oil to liquefied algae.

With the civil aviation industry under increasing pressure from increasing oil rates and ecological legislation, the race is on to find practical alternatives to standard kerosene and these up until now appear to boil down to various kinds of biofuel.

It was reported that Brazilian airline companies Azul, Gol, TAM and Trip would act as tactical consultants for the task.

The newest airline to start experimenting with brand-new fuels is the Alaska Air Group which has conducted internal US flights utilizing a mix of 80 % petroleum based fuel and 20% biofuel made from cooking oil. This mixture, it is claimed, can cut damaging emissions by 10%.

One truly encouraging development has been the relocation away from biofuels which contend head on with food customers therefore preventing a rate spiral. Not so long back, a surge in use of biofuels in cars triggered a spike in maize prices as US farmers diverted too much corn to fuel processing.

Hopefully in the future, airline companies and drivers will focus biofuel intake on non-food sources such as jatropha and algae. It would be a combined true blessing indeed if some individuals wound up starving simply to another person’s green credentials.
